Albuquerque, NM, October 15, 2024 – Sol Housing is pleased to announce the winners of its 2024 Building A Better Albuquerque Scholarship. The Building a Better Albuquerque Scholarship fund provides financial assistance to teens, young adults, and non-traditional students living in and around the communities that Sol Housing serves. This scholarship can be applied to any type of post-secondary education, including community college, trade school, and licensures. Applicants were evaluated on their academic goals, community involvement, and how they felt they could contribute to building a better Albuquerque. The three 2024 recipients are Munin Yambao, Senida Gurule, and Kimberly Trinh. Read more about each recipient at www.solhousing.org/scholarships.
Munin Yambao is studying nutrition at CNM and plans to transfer to UNM to pursue their bachelor's degree." I want to help with food insecurity and food education. In this current economy, the cost of food has skyrocketed with inflation. This causes an obstacle for people to access food, and even more challenges to eat a balanced meal.” Munin, a resident of Sol Housing’s PAH! Hiland Plaza, is a member of CNM's American Sign Language Club. “My work has helped me afford classes, but balancing work and school has been challenging. School has always been a challenge growing up as a Hard-of-Hearing person. Taking American Sign Language has helped with accessibility and helped me be more active in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community by learning the language."
Senida “Nida” Gurule is a Respiratory Therapy student at CNM. With a passion for healthcare and a desire to make a positive impact, Nida is committed to providing high-quality care. Her career goals are driven by a deep-seated passion for healthcare, a desire to make a difference in the lives of patients, and a commitment to professional growth and development. “I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead in my journey as a future respiratory therapist and look forward to contributing to the field while striving for excellence in patient care and service.” Nida has been working as an EMT for the past seven years, responding to 911 calls and providing critical care to those in need. In addition to her work as an EMT, Nida had the opportunity to work for FEMA during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as gaining experience as an Emergency Room technician.
Kimberly Trinh is a nursing student at CNM with a goal to pursue her bachelor’s degree in nursing. Originally, Kim began her educational studies in Computer Science but changed course after working as a caregiver. “I started working as a caregiver so I could take care of myself and my little sister. After coming to the realization that I loved the work that I was doing while caregiving, my academic goals had shifted completely. I had never felt as though I had a real drive or determination in my life. School and work seemed to be a means for survival, rather than passion; and I wandered aimlessly devoting myself to work to provide for my family. I feel as though I finally have a path in front of me, something I was able to choose for myself, and I'm so excited to begin.”
